A financial adviser takes history into his own hands
He has been involved with the local historical society as a board member, board president, and consultant despite their disappointing ability to think big, act entrepreneurially, and do the kind of history education that could really impact young people.
And so, my client took matters into his own hands!
He volunteered for an after school program at the local elementary school, and teamed up with a local tradesman to teach students traditional skills. By teaching students how to construct a fence, haul wood, make a haystack, and so many other survival skills from the 17th century, he engaged students’ imagination in what life was like in their town 400 years ago. They had hands-on fun that went far beyond reading a book!
The students also learned about the history of their town, when colonists arrived and how they got along with the Native Americans who were already there. They learned what a colonist was and why people left Europe for America, about hard physical work, citizenship, community, family life, and the lives of young people. Frankly, they came away with a deep sense of the roots of our nation.

This is just the kind of “match making” I love to do – matching business people with their historical passion, and then finding ways for them to act it out AND make a difference.
Will the students I mentioned here forget my client and their experience with him? Absolutely not! Will their parents? I doubt it! Will the parents view my client as a trustworthy, high quality individual the next time they need a financial adviser? What do you think?
Please don’t wait for someone to ask you to support local history. They may never ask. And please don’t think that writing a check is the only role for you to play. It isn’t.
History education is too important not to get involved, so please follow my client’s lead and take matters into your own hands!
